Meet the Team

Our History

Astron was established in 1976 by Thomas O Dowd. Thomas with a background in carpentry and joinery worked closely with the pioneering retailer Fergal Quinn to develop what was to become the backbone of the company, custom designed and built refrigeration unit the salad bar. These units soon become a stable entity in all food retail outlets.

In 1999 Astron Engineering moved to their purpose-built manufacturing facility in Rathnew Co. Wicklow. Where we are still based employing the best qualified craft people in the industry.

Though out the years Astron Engineering has only grown stronger in the field of custom refrigeration, exporting units as far as the Middle East. This has allowed Astron Engineering to not only become experts in this field we have expanded our knowledge and expertise into everything to do with retail fitout area.

We also pride ourselves in having the most modern up to date drawing, design, machinery and fabrication techniques. All under one roof willing to work side by side with our clients.

With over 25 years in depth experience within the core of Astron Engineering team, Jonathan has a wealth of knowledge and experience when it comes to design, engineering and reality of every project. Jonathan not only homes in on the minute detail but can also see the bigger picture of every design and project, and will execute with precision and quality in mind every time.

Bringing over 25 years of specialized experience in engineering, particularly in the field of refrigeration, Brian has honed his skills through many diverse projects and challenges, centered around customer satisfaction while also experienced in business development, Brian is a seasoned professional in the industry.

Jonathan Kirwan

Best known as MD of the infamous Gino’s Gelato chain in Ireland Jonathan has been working with Astron for more than 30 years in various guises.

Becoming familiar with the Astron business initially while building Ice Cream vans with his father and working closely with Tom & Astron. After establishing the First Gino’s Gelato shop 16 years ago with the expertise of the Astron team Jonathan has expanded now to 33 stores nationwide each individually crafted with the expertise of the Astron Team.
Having always had a keen interest in engineering and crafting & owning this process in the development and build of the Gino’s group when the opportunity to integrate further into the Astron business with the impending departure of Astron’s visionary founder Thomas O’Dowd.
Taking over the helm in late 2023 Jonathan and the Astron team have their sights set on new and exciting horizons for the next chapter of the Astron story. More About what the future holds at Astron Here.
